The subject, a journalist, began his career as a reporter on his home town paper, The Kansas City [Mo.] Star. In 1919 he helped establish The [New York] Daily News and became its managing editor. Three years later he became editor of Popular Science Monthly--a post he held until 1929, when he became editor of The American, a general-interest magazine. He edited The American until 1956, when its publication was suspended.
