This handbag was owned by Catherine Reed Allen (1812-1850), wife of Theodore Allen (ca. 1800-1850) and daughter of Luman Reed (1787-1836). Although not an artist himself, Allen was active in promoting the arts in New York City. He played an active role in forming Luman Reed's celebrated art collection, which the New-York Historical Society now owns. Reed was the first American to form a collection wholly composed of American artists.
