Wood, steel, iron, and silver rifle; iron furniture; steel ramrod with knotted and slurled head; silver oval with foliate engraving mounted on right buttstock; stamped marks on barrel tang, barrel bands, breech end of barrel, and frame; stamped cartouche inside banner on left side of stock at wrist; incised number on top of buttstock.

Developed in the late 1860's by Joseph Rider, Remington rolling blocks were among the breech-loading rifles and carbines that replaced the muzzle-loading firearms that had been used during the Civil War, and became the standard American weapons of the postwar years. About 15,000 contract rifles were made in 1872 by Remington for the New York National Guard.
