John Rogers, a Presbyterian clergyman, moved to New York in 1765 to accept the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church, and there he officiated until his death forty-six years later. The subject's first wife was Elizabeth Bayard, daughter of Colonel Peter Bayard of Cecil County, Maryland, and the portrait descended through the family until it came to the Society.
