During the Civil War, the Irish-American colonel Michael Corcoran commanded the 69th New York Regiment in defense of Washington, D.C. and at the First Battle of Bull Run. He displayed heroic bravery when he was imprisoned by the Confederates. Upon his release, he was invited to have dinner with President Lincoln. The ribbon displaying his portrait was probably worn at the reception welcoming him back to New York City in August 1862.
