Gold signet ring set with intaglio amethyst engraved with coat of arms; shoulders of shank decorated with cast images of war implements; interior of ring inscribed.

This ring was presented to the donor's late husband, Captain John Henry Coster (1835-1895), in recognition of his valor in saving the life of A. McStetson, Quartermaster of the 11th New York State Volunteers, who was drowning. The event happened in Newport News, Va., on October 12, 1861.
