Gallery Label:
Born in Benson, Vermont, the subject was the son of Rufus and Deborah (Wass) Griswold. He became a Baptist minister in 1837, but soon gave up the ministry for journalism and social reforms. He worked for Horace Greeley in New York (1839-40), and later as a book editor.
