Description:
Rectangular needlepoint rug made of wool yarn applied to linen foundation; ocher ground with dark blue and yellow medallion at center flanked on either side by a large, abstracted thistle with dark blue scrolling leaves, within rectangular border with stylized tulip motif on medium blue ground; light brown cotton backing and narrow yarn fringe on all sides.

The accession records suggest that the design of this rug is similar to Edward S. Frost's "Turkish" design (citation: W. W. Kent, "Rare Hooked Rugs," p. 179). By 1870, Edward Sands Frost, a tin peddler from Biddleford, Maine, was selling burlap for hooked rugs with his designs pre-printed in color by means of metal stencils (see Helen Comstock, ed., "The Concise Encyclopedia of American Antiques," New York, 1958, vol. 1, p. 212).
