Pair of silver salt spoons with downturned fiddle handles, squared shoulders and horizontal elliptical bowls; "Reed" engraved on the front of the handles in gothic script; maker's marks stamped on the undersides of the handles.
Gallery Label:
The inscription, "Reed" on both spoons suggests they may have been owned by the New York City drygoods merchant and patron of the arts, Luman Reed (1785- 1836). Reed moved to New York in 1815, and these spoons may have been acquired by him before his death in 1836. The dates of manufacture, 1814-1847, suggest that these spoons were almost certainly owned by Reed or one of his children. The donor's ancestor Jonathan Sturges, was Reed's business partener, and later the two families intermarried.
