Sam Patch (ca. 1807-29) who gained fame for his spectacular daredevil diving feats, made his last, fatal dive on Novemer 13, 1829, from a platform erected on the brink of Genesee Falls. His body was not recovered until March 17, 1830, when it was found broken and frozen in a cake of ice at the mouth of the river. The body was buried at Charlotte, after which Patch passed into the speech and folklore of the nation. A woodcut and description is in the Boston Columbian Centinel, November 18, 1829.
