Description:
Vertical rectangular linen cross-stitch sampler with various colors of silk floss; images of a Dutch fruit tree, candles as symbols of devotion or prayer and a parrot symbolizing talkiveness; bordered by a deeply arcaded strawberry meandering motif; cross stitched; inscription of name, "Magdalen Guion".
Gallery Label:
Magdalen Guion was born in New Rochelle, NY in 1774 and married John Drake of New York City in 1795. He was a prosperous New York merchant who in 1813, along with his brother Jacob, lent the government $10,000 to help finance the War of 1812.
