The subject was the son of the Rev. Samuel Verbryck (1721-84), minister of the Dutch Reformed Church of Tappan, New York, and Susanna (Van Der Linde) Verbryck. He was a soldier in the Continental Army, Supervisor of Orangetown, Rockland County, New York, and a member of the Committee of 1821 to revise the New York state constitution. The artist, his son, chose to spell his surname "Ver Bryck."
