Description:
Shako with rigid, black felt-covered cylindrical crown which is tapered and angled forward; black patent leather top, visor and chin strap; circular gilded metal insignia with border of alternating spears and cannon, with "7" in applied metal on black enameled disk at center; buttons securing chin strap embossed with crossed cannon; missing pompon.

This shako was worn by Private Valentin Heyerdahl (1870-1907), who served in Co. C, 7th Regiment, National Guard New York, from 1888 to 1893.
