Description:
Shako with rigid, black felt-covered bell crown with black patent leather trim and visor; large shield-breasted eagle insignia of gilded metal mounted below black silk rosette on front of hat; heavy gold braid draped in front and back; metal scale chin strap with leather backing attached at either side to hooks suspended below gilded metal buttons embossed with crossed cannon; black and red feather plume.

According to the accession records, this shako was part of the dress uniform worn by the donor, George A. Zabriskie, as a member of the Veteran Corps of Artillery. Various other parts of this uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection.
