Description:
Black wool felt shako with black patent leather top and trim; angled cylindrical crown with gilded metal insignia of the 7th Regiment, N.G.S.N.Y., attached to front; small somewhat rectangular visor; chin strap secured at either side with a button embossed with crossed cannon; white pompon mounted above insignia; black leather sweatband.
Gallery Label:
According to New York City Directories, Baker & McKenney was located at 63 Walker Street from 1865 to 1866. The original owner of this shako, Isaac Remsen Lane (1840-1910), for ten years president of the Hanover Fire Insurance Company, of New York, was an enthusiastic veteran of the Seventh Regiment, N.Y.N.G., in United States service. He enlisted as a private at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, serving until 1863. He later saw service during the draft riots in New York City.
