This small swatch of orange nylon fabric was acquired from a volunteer in Central Park during the run of "The Gates" (February 17-27, 2005), the $21 million public art spectacle by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. "The Gates" was comprised of 7,500 16-foot-high frames hung with rectangles of heavy nylon fabric, stationed at regular intervals along 23 miles of walkways throughout Central Park. "The Gates" organizers described it as a "memorable joyous experience for the people of New York."
