Description:
Brass struck medal with obverse depicting clothed bust of Stephan Douglas facing left with legend: "DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE/STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS"; date below bust truncation: "1860." Reverse contains the Great Seal of the United States with surrounding legend: "LIBERTY UNION AND EQUALITY."

Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was born and educated in Vermont, but moved to Illinois in 1833. He served as a Democrat in the U.S. Congress from 1843-1861. He sought the nomination for the presidency in 1852 and 1856, both times without success. In 1860 he received the nomination a third time, but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln.
