Description:
Brown leather strap with 9 perferated holes, leather-covered buckle frame with single metal tongue.
Gallery Label:
This leather strap was among the items found in the footlocker of William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor with the Army engineers during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
