The album in which this sketch was received is inscribed on the flyleaf, "Sketches made by/Thomas H. Hotchkiss/Rome, Italy." Hotchkiss and Lucy Durand Woodman, the mother of Nora D. Woodman, were friends; moreover, similar inscriptions appear on other items presented by Miss Woodman to the Society. She is therefore assumed to be the donor.
