Description:
Sword (hanger) with curved, single-edged steel blade with half-width fuller and etched designs (now faint) on obverse and reverse; brass stirrup hilt with simple langets on obverse and reverse and a quillon that curves down abruptly and terminates in a disk finial; ivory grip with carved ridges; brass pommel with strip that extends to ferrule (now missing) at base of grip.
Gallery Label:
This sword is referred to in the accession records as a "U.S. Infantry saber (or hanger)," an identification based on an illustration in Smithsonian Institution Bulletin No. 163 (p. 24). It was received with a tag attached that described it as a "hanger / Revolutionary or War of 1812 / found at Tarrytown on Hudson, 1870."
