Description: 
Presentation sword with slightly curved, single-edged steel blade with two fullers, one broad and one narrow, and etched designs on obverse and reverse; brass half-basket hilt with openwork leaf and scroll design on obverse side incorporating initials "US" and large globular quillon with scroll motif incised on either side; grip covered in leather and wrapped with twisted wire; helmet-shaped pommel with leaf border; silver-plated scabbard with heavy, elaborately engraved and molded brass mounts; upper band with shield-breasted eagle and middle band with oval shield superimposed on crossed arms, each band with a single carrying ring; tip with asymmetrical drag; brass plaque with engraved inscription affixed between upper and middle bands.
Gallery Label: 
This sword is referred to in the accession records as a "U.S. infantry officer's saber." It was presented to Captain David Austen Ryerson of Company C, 13th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, in 1862.
