Description: 
Presentation sword with straight, evenly tapered, double-edged steel blade with etched designs and inscriptions on obverse and reverse; gilded brass hilt with grip covered in black leather and wrapped with twisted wire; counter-guard, which has military motif molded at center, is cast in one piece with short quillon with disk finial and shell-shaped counter-guard (obverse side only) with monogram ("GAP"), fouled anchor, and crossed arms in relief; pommel in the form of a section of an inverted cone with a shield-breasted eagle molded on the obverse side and a blank shield on the reverse; burnished steel scabbard with gilded brass mounts consisting of an upper band with two carrying rings, a middle band with one carrying ring, and tip with crossed flags molded on obverse side and a single star on the reverse; sword and scabbard are stored in chamois bag inside a rectangular wooden box with hinged lid lined inside with quilted blue satin; rectangular silver plaque with applied monogram ("GAR") in gilded metal mounted on lid of box, and similar plaque with engraved inscription mounted inside.
Gallery Label: 
This sword was worn by George A. Price, grandfather of the donor's husband, at the funeral of Ulysses S. Grant, which took place in New York on August 8, 1885. The sword was later presented to him by his comrades in U.S. Grant Post No. 327, Dept. of New York Grand Army of the Republic, in recognition of his "fidelity to the interests of the Post" while it acted as Guard of Honor to Grant's remains.
