Description:
Leather, metal, brass, and cotton sword belt; stitched, black leather-covered canvas belt with sliding clip near center of belt suspending scabbard sling with hook at end that fastens to another sling on left, and with rectangular brass plate at right end that fastens to clip on left; plate has stamped eagle in center, with shield on breast, branch in one talon, and three arrows in other talon, flanked by wreath at bottom, and with rayed background, thirteen stars, and inscription inside scroll at top;

This belt was probably worn by Lt. Col. William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor in the Army during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure. It was found among the items in his footlocker.
