Description:
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with broad fuller running full length and blue enamel, gilding, and etching on obverse and reverse; brass stirrup hilt with traces of silver plating, shield-shaped langet, and quillon with bud-shaped finial; reverse P form knuckle-bow with molded floral decoration; eagle head pommel with end of knuckle-bow in open beak; carved ivory grip; brass scabbard with oval frog stud, two carrying rings, and incised decoration on upper half and on tip; traces of silver plating on scabbard.
Gallery Label:
According to the accession records, this sword belonged to the donor's father, Adjutant General Joseph C. Shelton, and was probably used in the Mexican War.
