Description: 
Sword with slightly curved, single-edged steel blade with three-quarter length fuller and etched designs on obverse and reverse; brass hilt with grip covered in white fish skin and wrapped with twisted brass wire; oval counter-guard with openwork oak leaf and acorn design on obverse with "USN" molded in relief on underside; helmet-shaped pommel with oak leaf and acorn border centering a flower and eagle in oval frame studded with thirteen stars molded on top; dolphin head at end of knuckle-bow joining pommel, and dolphin head finial on quillon; tassel on strip of gold metallic cloth tape attached to knuckle-bow; leather scabbard with brass carrying ring mounts, which are cast in high relief and resemble knotted rope, and tip with molded drag similar to "dolphins" on hilt; leather waist belt with slings clipped to carrying rings, the belt with circular buckle with interlocking eagle medallion and wreath.

According to the accession records, this sword belonged to George Elmore Ide, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1861 to 1901. The donor was apparently his daughter-in-law. Her husband, John Jay Ide (d. 1962), was a great-great grandson of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States.
