Description:
Dress sword with straight, double-edged steel blade with etched interlace designs framing inscription "Walter Cutting" on obverse and similar motifs framing inscription "U.S" on reverse; blade is diamond-shaped in cross section; gilded brass hilt with grip covered in fish skin and wrapped with twisted wire; counter-guard consisting of two shell-shaped pieces with emblems molded in relief, an eagle on the obverse side and a shield superimposed on crossed arms on the reverse; reverse section of counter-guard is hinged and may be lowered when a button underneath is depressed; pommel shaped like a section of an inverted cone, with an eagle on the obverse side and a blank shield on the reverse, and cap with molded floral design cast separately; tassel with coils made of gold metallic thread attached to strip of gold metallic cloth tape which is wrapped tightly around knuckle-bow; matte-surfaced steel scabbard with gilded brass mounts, including a plain band at throat, upper and middle bands with molded leaf and berry motifs, the former with two carrying rings and the latter with one, and drag with a flower and leaves molded on either side.
