Description: 
Presentation sword with short, slightly curved, single-edged blade engraved with a series of ornate letters and numerals on a one-inch band below hilt on obverse and reverse; silver stirrup hilt with reverse P-type knuckle-bow with forked branch and quillon with cylindrical finial; ivory grip with wide silver ferrule and engraved mounts with openwork detailing; oval silver pommel with capstan rivet; sheet metal (iron?) scabbard with silver throat and middle band with embossed beaded borders (each originally with a carrying ring, now only one remains on throat) and silver tip.
Gallery Label: 
John Chrystie, to whom this sword was presented, distinguished himself as a soldier in the War of 1812. Chrystie received the rank of first lieutenant in the 6th Regiment of Infantry, U.S. Army, on May 3, 1808, the same day that Zebulon Pike received his commission as major in the same regiment. Chrystie was made lieutenant-colonel in the 13th Regiment of Infantry on March 12, 1812. This sword was purchased by N-YHS at the Few-Chrystie sale, Parke Bernet Galleries, New York, January 14, 1949.
