Description: 
Sword with broad, straight, double-edged steel blade with two quarter-width fullers running side-by-side down center of blade; brass hilt cast in one piece with cross quillons terminating in large disk finials with concentric circles molded in either side, grip with molded ridges, and oval pommel with capstan rivet; leather scabbard with brass throat with teardrop-shaped frog stud and brass tip with ball finial.

This type of sword, adopted for use by U.S. foot artillery and infantry in the 1830s, was based on a French pattern and resembled "the popular conception of a Roman infantry sword," according to Harold Peterson ("The American Sword, 1775-1945," p. 43). This particular example is identified as a foot artillery sword in the accession records.
