Description: 
Dress sword with straight, double-edged steel blade which is elliptical in cross section; gilded brass hilt cast in three pieces: counter-guard, pommel, and knuckle-bow and grip; crescent-shaped counter-guard on obverse side, with openwork crest with two-headed bird at center; quillon with molded leaf decoration and ball finial; grip wrapped with twisted wire; urn-shaped pommel; leather scabbard with gilded brass throat and tip, the former with elongated frog stud.

According to the accession records, this sword was part of the uniform worn by Colonel Montgomery Schuyler (1877-1955) as Councillor of the U.S. Embassy in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 1907 to 1909. The emblem represented on the counter-guard is apparently the Russian royal crest. Colonel Schuyler's uniform coat are trousers are also in the N-YHS Collection (1956.91ab).
