Description:
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with fuller running from ricasso almost to point; gilded brass hilt cast in one piece with grip ribbed in imitation of wire wrapping, globular pommel, kidney-shaped counter-guard on obverse side, and short flared quillon with oval button finial; blackened steel scabbard with gilded brass mount with elongated frog stud at throat and brass tip with slightly asymmetrical drag.
Gallery Label:
This sword is identified in the accession records as a U.S. Infantry noncommissioned officer's sword. It is said to be similar to one described and pictured in Smithsonian Institution Bulletin No. 163 (plate 13, fig. 5).
