Description: 
Sword (saber) with curved, single-edged steel blade with a broad fuller extending from hilt to within about 7 1/2 inches of point; steel stirrup hilt with simple shield-shaped langets and curved quillon with cylindrical finial; wooden grip (badly deteriorated); bird's head pommel with backstrap extending to ferrule at base of grip; steel scabbard with rudimentary drag.

According to the accession records, this "dragoon type" saber was probably used by U.S. Army enlisted men. Swords of similar type are pictured in Smithsonian Institution Bulletin No. 163 (p. 136).
