Description: 
Dress sword with straight, evenly tapered steel blade, which is triangular in section; gilded brass hilt cast in three pieces: grip with oval framed eagle in relief on either side, acorn-shaped pommel, and guard consisting of two scrolled quillons and two shields, one on obverse side and one on reverse; leather scabbard with gilded brass throat and tip, the former with oval frog stud.

According to the accession records, this sword was worn as part of the uniform of the Veteran Corps of the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York. This particular sword apparently belonged to Ernest Louis Walz (d. 1918), who served as a private in the 8th Company, 7th Regiment, New York State Militia, during the Civil War and resided later in his life in Brooklyn. His uniform coat, trousers, epaulets, and other accessories are also in the N-YHS Collection (1970.56a-f).
