Description:
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with wide fuller and designs done in gilding, blue enamel, and etching on obverse and reverse; brass cross quillons, carved ivory grip, and gilded brass eagle head pommel with chain that extends from beak to end of quillon; brass scabbard with oval frog stud, two carrying rings, and scrolling leaves and eagle insignia engraved on obverse.

According to the accession records, this sword belonged to George Washington Matsell (1811-1877), a Major in the 146th Regiment of the New York Infantry.
