Description:
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with full-length fuller and etched designs on blue enamel and gilding on obverse and reverse; gilded brass stirrup hilt with reverse P-type knuckle-bow, the lower half of which is molded with ornate leaf design, leaf-molded langets, and slightly curved quillon with large bud finial; ivory grip carved with linear patterns; eagle's head pommel with backstrap extending to ferrule at base of grip; gilded brass scabbard with scrolling leaf motif engraved on either side of two carrying rings, and similar motif engraved on tip; shield surmounted by eagle engraved between the two carrying rings.
Gallery Label:
This sword, which is identified in the accession records as "Field Officer's sword, 7th Regt, 1850," is apparently similar to one pictured in "American and European Swords in the Historical Collections of the U.S. National Museum" by T. T. Belote (p. 93).
