Description:
Sword with straight, double-edged steel blade with etched designs on obverse and reverse; blade is diamond-shaped in cross section; shell-shaped gilded brass counter-guard, obverse side only, with shield-breasted eagle molded in relief; quillon with oval button finial with molded lion mask; grip covered in fish skin and wrapped with wire; pommel shaped like a section of an inverted cone, with eagle molded on the obverse side and a blank shield on the reverse; knuckle-bow appears to be missing; blackened steel scabbard with brass throat with elongated frog stud and drag decorated with crossed flags on the obverse side and a single star on the reverse (throat with traces of gilding).

According to the accession records, this sword belonged to Captain Harry A. Ely (d. 1926). Ely served as a captain or lieutenant in the Spanish-American War and as an artillery instructor in World War I.
