Description:
Coiled flat metal tape measure in circular case with hinged tab which rotates (no longer moves tape); tape stuck in an extended position, with metal loop at the end.
Gallery Label:
This tape measure belonged to Lt. Col. William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor in the Army during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure. It was found among the items in his footlocker.
