Coiled flat metal tape measure tied with string; loop handles at both ends.
Gallery Label:
This tape measure was among the items found in the footlocker of William H. Paine, who served as a Col. with the Army engineers during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
