Description:
Porcelain tea bowl and saucer, Nanking pattern with hand-painted blue underglaze decoration; spear and post border with gilding inside rims and gilding on rim edges; island motif (willow design) on exterior of cup at center of saucer.
Gallery Label:
According to the donor, this tea bowl and saucer were used by John André, British officer convicted as a spy and executed September 30, 1780; however, the style and the quality of the porcelain suggest a later date.
