This portrait of young Thomas Lodge, who is believed to have been the son of William Lodge, belongs to a group of important early 18th-century paintings showing children of prominent upper Hudson River families with their pet animals. They all date from around 1730-45, and were all in some way related to English mezzotints. The Society's portrait of Thomas Lodge is especially important because the artist is known from his signature; the other portraits of this group are by anonymous painters.
