A handwritten note in black ink by the donor attached to the verso reads: "This water color is a picture of the / "Iroquois", cruiser in the "Mediterranean" / during the Civil War. Edgar F. Doane / was drugist and assisted surgeon / on this ship. He was on another / U.S. ship, which cruised in Southern / waters, at first. This picture has / also been given to The Hiscorical / Society of 170th Central Park West. / N.Y. City, N.Y.. / By Josephine Griswold / Vanderbilt Ave. / Babylon / Long Island
