Construction of the 36-gun frigate Constellation was authorized by Congress in 1794. She was built at Baltimore, Maryland, and was launched in September 1797. The ship was rebuilt in 1805-12 and was broken up at Norfolk, Virginia, in 1854, when she was replaced by a second Constellation which is still afloat. This picture was probably painted in Boston around 1801.
