The subject was the son of Stephen Spencer, Sr. (1766-1846), and Cynthia (Utley) Spencer (1763-1834) who settled on a farm in Nunda, New York, in 1818. He became a teacher and worked in a general store; he then became a builder and contractor specializing in railroads. He served as town constable, deputy sheriff, town collector, justice of the peace, and postmaster. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
