Franklin Knox was born in Boston, the son of William Edwin and Sarah (Barnard) Knox. He started out as a journalist, and after World War I became general manager of all Hearst newspapers, but left that position to become publisher of the Chicago "Daily News" in 1931. A staunch Republican, Knox was his party's nominee for vice-president under Alfred Landon in 1936. He was made secretary of the navy by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.
