In this half-length portrait the subject is shown in military uniform, holding a scroll of paper in his right hand. The gold buttons on his blue coat bear the American eagle and the insignia of rank on his shoulder carries a single star. The artist based this likeness on either a daguerreotype portrait of Taylor of ca. 1848 or, more likely, Alexander Hay Ritchie's 1848 engraving of that daguerreotype.
