Program date: June 30, 2020
When slavery ended in 1865, a period of Reconstruction began, leading to such achievements as the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. But efforts to create an interracial democracy were contested from the start. Marci Reaven, vice president, history exhibitions, and Dominique Jean-Louis, project historian, tell the dramatic story of the struggle for Black equality after the end of slavery, and explore a half century of stunning advances and reversals.
