Originally published in 2012, science author David Quammen’s book Spillover hypothesized the increasing frequency of diseases spreading from animals to humans, coupled with the speed and ease of modern world travel, could be the recipe for a global pandemic. Now, in the midst of COVID-19, Quammen discusses his work and unique insights into how, where, and why diseases emerge.

David Quammen is a bestselling author and journalist who has written several books, including Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic. He has written dozens of stories for National Geographic, and his essays, features, and reviews have appeared in Harper’s, Esquire, The Atlantic, the New York Times, and Rolling Stone, among other publications. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-executive chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the author of The American Story: Conversations with Master Historians.
