The New-York Historical Society's September 11 collection preserves objects related both to those who were lost in the 9/11 attacks and those who struggled to keep their memory alive in the days and months that followed.

A rotating selection from the approximately 6,200 photographs, comprising the powerful here is new york collection of images taken in New York on and in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, is displayed in the Smith Gallery, with a large fragment of a fire truck destroyed during the 9/11 attack. There is also a rotating selection of objects related to 9/11 in the Luce Center.

Twenty objects from the New-York Historical Society's September 11 collection will be lent to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum for the museum's spring 2014 opening including: World Trade Center Aluminum facade fragment (On special deposit by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York Police Department and the New York City Department of Sanitation, TR2002.62.8); Bicycle Messengers’ Memorial (Courtesy of the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, TR2002.63.1) Chelsea Jeans Memorial from the World Trade Center Attacks, September 11, 2001 (Gift of David and Sabine Cohen, 2002.85.1)
