The accession records suggest that this rug may have been designed by Edward S. Frost between 1864 and 1876 (citation: W. W. Kent, "Rare Hooked Rugs," p. 177). If so, this rug is not unique. By 1870, Edward Sands Frost, a tin peddler from Biddleford, Maine, was selling burlap for hooked rugs with his designs pre-printed in color by means of metal stencils (see Helen Comstock, ed., "The Concise Encyclopedia of American Antiques," New York, 1958, vol. 1, p. 212).
