Rectangular mahogany medicine chest with flat, hinged lid, brass rosette mounts and bail handle on top, brass rectangular escutcheon with chamfers, and drawer at bottom with circular handle flush with mount; inside of lid padded and covered with green velvet; upper section of chest (above drawer) divided into fifteen square compartments covered in green velvet, containing six colorless glass apothecary bottles blown in a mold with wide mouth, rounded shoulders, square base with pontil mark, and pressed glass stopper, four colorless glass apothecary bottles blown in a mold with narrow mouth, rounded shoulders, square base with pontil mark, and pressed glass stopper, one colorless glass bottle blown in a mold with short cylindrical neck, rounded shoulders, square base, and metal screw top, two larger round colorless glass bottles with corks, and one round bottle with longer cylindrical neck, flared lip, and remains of cork in mouth; in drawer, companion booklet, cardboard cylinder covered with paper containing adhesive plasters, small paper packet, and five small round colorless glass bottles, four with corks and one with slightly different cork; felt attached to bottom.

Description:
Rectangular wooden box or chest with domed, hinged lid, iron latch and escutcheon, wire handle and carved slot on top; painted decoration consisting of birds flanking handle on top, with wreath of roses in middle, in red, blue,and white with some green leaves; front painted with swags of fabric pinned at intervals, in red, white, and blue, above roses and leaves strung below latch; on each side, string of three roses above swag of fabric painted with pattern in red, white, and blue; red, white, blue, and black paint on cream-colored ground, slightly discolored.

Marriage boxes such as this were a traditional form in Normandy, France. Painted with symbols alluding to love and prosperity, the boxes were used by a new bride to store her money, jewelry, and bridal headress when she moved to her new husband's house after the wedding.

Description:
Cast iron mechanical bank in the form of figure seated with feet pressed together, knees splayed out, holding pig (with nose facing up) between legs; caricature of Irishman with large head out of proportion to body, wearing hat with shamrock, knee breeches, stockings, and buckled shoes; when coin is placed on pig's nose, pressing the lever in back makes the pig kick the penny off of his nose; figure's eyes then roll back, his lower jaw moves, he sticks out his tongue, and the penny falls into Paddy's open mouth.

Cast iron mechanical bank in the form of a large eagle mounted on a pedestal with two eaglets mounted at edge of nest; eagle with glass eyes and jointed wings and body, base textured to represent natural environment, with nest; coin is placed in mouth of large eagle; when lever under tail is pressed, the large eagle leans forward and drops the coin into the nest, and the eaglets swallow the coin.
