This image was first used in 1222 as the Scottish royal seal by Alexander II, son of William the Lion, but has not had an official use since Scotland came under British rule. This Scottish flag is strictly speaking, only be used by a Scottish monarch, therefore only by Her Majesty the Queen in her official capacity as Queen of Scots.
